The pig is the 12th sign of the zodiac and while a pig is not thought to be a smart animal in China, the pig symbol represents luck and overall good fortune.

What does good fortune look like in a world where data privacy is a straddling security and convenience and control versus non-control.

Do we want to put our data in the hands of the companies that we work with and trust them to protect us, or do we want to take that responsibility into our own hands? There is no clear answer- maybe a little of each.

And each of us wears both of those hats. As consumers we need to be proactive, and not always choose convenience. We need to shred personal and financial documents, we need to manage our passwords and keep our anti-virus up to date. As businesses, we have an obligation to our customers to protect any personal and financial data that they are trusting us with. Can we say with 100% certainty that we are doing that? Likely not, after all the criminals are smarter than we are. If these national, high profile companies are not locked down, how can the rest of us be expected to be? Well your reputation depends on it.

In addition to securing data, if you are not already providing ID Protection to your employees and customers as a value-added benefit, you are missing an opportunity to be proactive, and protect both yourself and your stakeholders.

Consider offering education to your employees and community. Much of what we need to do to protect ourselves is common sense and as consumers, we sometimes need a nudge to put those simple steps in place. You might actually find that good fortune comes your way once you offer a little good fortune to others.
